Columbus Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant New Headworks, 2008

Owner: City of Columbus, Division of Sewerage and Drainage

Location: Columbus, Franklin County

Nominated by: Steven A. Mess, P.E., Malcolm Pirnie, Inc.

Description: The new headworks is the entry point for sewage collected and transported from the entire City and surrounding communities. The initial 330 mgd capacity can be expanded to 550 mgd as demand increases. Sewage enters the facility as much as five stories below ground and is pumped high enough to flow by gravity through the treatment process. An innovative self-cleaning pump station uses bar racks and stainless steel screens to remove large trash from the waste stream. Grit tanks remove fine grit to reduce wear and damage to downstream equipment. An odor control system treats up to 100,000 cfm of air that comes into contact with the waste stream. Influent flow controls provide 60 million gallons of wet-weather storage in upstream interceptor sewers to reduce bypass flows.
